PAUL KLEE was a swiss-german artist (1879-1940) passionate about music. He did not mind whether there were real objects in his paintings or not but there was always a close attention to colour and shape. To him, what we see is not the only truth. He was obsessed about COLOUR and FREEDOM at drawing that he could observe when children painting.

“Art does not reproduce the visible; rather, it makes visible” he said once.

He used to work at a very important german school of Art and Design called BAUHAUS.

Look at these examples of his paintings bearing in mind what you have just read about him.

At this new assignment you will have to create a urban landscape (a city) based on the last Paul Klee’s painting viewed previously and titled “Castle and Sun”, 1928.

So that, we are going to create some geometric shapes made of cardboard (from a cereal box or similar) and we will use them as templates to create our city. At least you will have to make these shapes:

1st.- A 30×30 mm. square.

2nd.- Two triangles. Both half the part of a 30×30 mm. square.

3rd.- A 30 x 60 mm rectangle.

4th.- An equilateral triangle with sides 60 mm.

5thº.-  An isosceles triangle with sides 30, 60 and 60 mm.

and 6th.- A scalene triangle with sides 30, 50 and 60 mm..

Once you have cut them out, we will use this kind of “geometric templates” to design a street view on a “watercolour” piece of paper. Later on we will colour it in Paul klee’s way. To get this “watercolour” effect we will water down our gouache colours. You must get your design to match with your classmate’s.

ASSESSMENT CRITERIA

o.- Name, lastname and group.

1st.- Frame just at the bottom part of your drawing.

2nd.- Accuracy at drawing on the cardboard and cutting out the geometric shapes.

3rd.- Creativity and Composition at drawing the city.

4th.- The way you display the different colours on the paper.

5th.- Creation of different textures.

6th.- Match your design with two other classmates (write their names both sides the back side of your piece of paper).

7th.- Neatness.

8th.- Self assessment.
